On September 17, 2024, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center will unveil a new exhibit highlighting the role of northern elephant seals in understanding climate change. By migrating over 9,000 miles and diving to depths of up to a mile, these seals provide crucial data from otherwise inaccessible parts of the ocean. Equipped with tracking tags funded by UCSC scientists, the seals help measure vital oceanic parameters such as temperature, pH, and salinity.
The chemistry of water can be abstract and hard to visualize. We are proud for the opportunity to be a part of this program and donate pH and salinity testing strips for the exhibit. These strips allow visitors test water and to engage directly with climate research and learn about the conservation efforts essential for protecting both elephant seals and their habitats.
